Prep20 minutes
Total20 minutes
This tex-mex flavor bomb is spicy, earthy and tangy and is absolutely delicious on the obvious — nachos, tacos, scrambled eggs — and the not so obvious — sweet potato fries, etc, etc, etc. Add this blend to your salad dressings or dips, sprinkle it on vegetables, mix it into a simmering pot of beans, spice up your bearnaise. You taste buds will be happy!

Instructions

Toast Away

  • Toast the cumin seeds and black peppercorns in a sauté pan over low heat for 8 to 10 minutes until they start to turn brown and have a toasted appearance. After toasting, turn off the heat and let the seeds and peppercorns cool for a couple of minutes.

Grind Away

  • Transfer the toasted cumin seeds and peppercorns to a spice grinder and thoroughly grind. Transfer to the airtight container.

Shake It Up

  • Add the remaining ingredients — Ancho Chile Powder, Smoked Paprika, Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Turmeric, Cayenne Pepper, Cumin Seed, Black Peppercorn, Oregano, Kosher Salt — to the airtight container. Shake to mix up or stir thoroughly.

Store It Well

  • Add a dash — or a fistful (shhhh) — to your favorite dishes and sit back and enjoy. These delicious flavors will remain just that for up to 6 months as long as it is in an airtight container in a dark and cool place.

Notes

Getting Toasty
Toasting the cumin seeds and peppercorns first can enhance their flavor, and grinding them in a spice grinder can help release their aromatic oils and distribute the spices evenly.
Fresh Is Best
Cooking with super-fresh spices and herbs is a game-changer! They bring out vibrant flavors and delightful aromas in your dishes. Fresh ingredients are like culinary magic, ensuring every spice and herb stands out, making your meals taste even more amazing. I recommend buying small amounts of spices (from the bulk section) as needed.
